Ethnographic Study of Voting Behaviour of Youth (Part-10)

During the survey the researcher found that the answers for the question of mass media role in the voting behaviour of Youth are as under:

1.1.1.1  Young people who were agreed

When the question was asked to the young people for the importance of mass media and they replied in such a way that 70 % of Youth respondents were agreed that mass media was influencing the voting behaviour because it was providing information about the right and wrong in the context of political issues. They said that access to mass media was not too much expensive and everyone could get access easily to make updated him with a little cost.

Most of the Youth respondents were enthusiastic about the research topic and contributed with open heart as well as welcomed to share their ideas and beliefs in complete detail. They said, “This topic is very important to discuss and share in this society”. Their passion was unbelievable about the politics. They were very ambitious to open the discussion and knowing the political knowledge of each other. Their response was good because they want more knowledge and learning.

The researcher included some of the case studies of those who strongly agreed that mass media had influence in the voting behaviour of Youth.

1.1.1.1.1     Case study 2

The researcher conducted an interview with his respondent and his response was as under:

Mr. Bashir Khan was a post graduate and doing job in a private company. His age was 28 and residence was Sector G-11/3 Islamabad. He said that the role of mass media was significant in our Youth. Especially the educated Youth was getting benefit from the services of mass media. It’s a cost effective way of communication. Through mass media the political socialization of Youth was establishing and developing as well as enhancing to a remarkable level.

The Youth political orientations were also improving because of variety of sharing information with mass media. Internet and TV were also very cheap source of communication. He also pointed out that the different cellular companies had launched call packages with low cost, were encouraging Youth interaction and sharing of current affairs. Hence it was summed up that he agreed that the mass media influenced the voting behaviour of Youth.

1.1.1.1.2     Case study 3

The researcher met with a female respondent who was 25 years old and living in sector G-11/2 Islamabad. She did not tell her name due to some reasons. She was a house wife and passed her bachelor examination from Iqra University Islamabad. She said that mass media especially internet had solved many of her problems. She said that she could not say things with some persons in face to face contact. She got opportunity to share her feelings about political issues to other fellows.

She told that television was a good source of information to build political understanding for the individuals of the society. She told that with different private channels, she became aware of the political issues of the country as well as the world.

She could analyze and think about the right and wrong in the political based programs and shows of the television channels. She told that old traditional political parties and their systems should be removed from the country. She was in favor of a new leadership in the country. She was strongly agreed that the mass media was influencing the voting behaviour of Youth.

1.1.1.1.3     Case study 4

The researcher conducted an interview with his respondent and his response was as under:

Mr. Usman was a graduate and doing his job in Police Department in Islamabad. His age was 34 years and service was about 8 years. He was living in Sector G-11/1 Islamabad. His father was died 10 years ago. He was the only source of income. He was asked about the topic and he replied, “Mass media has direct effect on the Youth”. By exploring it was cleared by the respondent that Youth of Pakistan was totally adopting the ways and culture presented in the mass media.

They used to update themselves with the services and contributions of mass media. With the help of mass media people could be informed about the formulation of any legal policies by the state. So, young people did not deny the effects of the mass media.

1.1.1.2  Young people who were disagreed

The remaining 20% of Youth respondents disagreed that mass media had no influence on their voting behaviour because they said that education played role in political decision making issues. They also said that the mass media is spreading wrong information as it is being used for other people of the enemies of the Pakistan. They said that all mass media is a commercial commodity and can be sold and purchased for the interests of the other people who are not sincere to our country and want to destroy our country and sovereignty.

The researcher included some of the case studies of those who strongly disagreed that mass media had no influence in the voting behaviour of Youth.

1.1.1.2.1     Case study 5

The researcher conducted an interview with his respondent and his response was as under:

Mr. Usama Ghori was one of the respondents who participated in the interview. He was 32 years old and belonged to Sector G-11/1 Islamabad. He was a teacher in an academy and used to teach students in their houses for earning and supporting his family. His father was died in his childhood. He got master degree in social sciences from Allama Iqbal University, Islamabad.

He told the researcher that he did not believe that mass media enhancing the political understanding of the Youth. He told that mass media is commercial commodity. He said, “The person who have money, can buy the mass media to achieve his planned interests”. His opinion was that mass media was used by the commercial purposes in his country. They were just a tool to make deceptive things as pure as truth. Mostly wealthy people used it as a source of getting reputation in the country. They just wanted revenues to multiply their wealth.

1.1.1.2.2     Case study 6

The researcher conducted an interview with his respondent and her response was as under:

Mrs.Shaista was 30 years old and her education was from Islamic University Islamabad in Islamic Studies. She got her master degree in 2006. She was asked about the impact of mass media in the voting behaviour of Youth and she replied in such a way, that mass media was not doing things good for our Islamic culture. It had destroyed her religious norms and values. It always used to propagate troubling agendas against her country and Youth.

It was not improving and enhancing the political behaviour of the Youth. It was just a source of entertainment for those who had weakened their religious norms and values. It was not influencing the voting behaviour of Youth. She told that the only thing which was influencing the youth participation in political activities would be their social groups and family.

1.1.1.2.3     Case study 7

The researcher met with his respondent and found following points about the topic:

Mr.Aleem Khan was doing his business in sector G-11 markaz, Islamabad. He belonged to Islamabad since his birth. His age was 35 years. He told that mass media was not playing in the voting behaviour of Youth. He said, “There is something which is important known as ethnicity”.

He believed that the only thing which could influence the said topic was ethnicity. Ethnic groups were the main force applicable in political issues and their solutions. It was his statement that any person who belonged to an ethnic group would prefer it. He would not be rebel of his ethnic group. So the important thing was ethnicity which matter in the voting behaviour of Youth.

The researcher concluded that the respondent was talking about the importance of the ethnicity. He did not believe in the impact of mass media.
